A couple of years ago I was at a track session for a local running club and the coach there was taking everyone through the warm-up. He was a great coach, very enthusiastic but maybe took this a little too far on this occasion as he started with some pretty challenging plyometrics.
We’d barely begun when one runner yelped and collapsed in a heap clutching her calf. A quick trackside examination suggested quite a significant calf tear and she needed help to mobilise and a lift home to where she could recuperate with some advice on acute injury management.
It is important to prepare someone for sport but also to use a warm-up that suits the individual need. Not everyone will be ready to leap into plyometrics! Sadly, in this case, rather than preparing this lady for a run she developed an injury that kept her away from her sport for quite some time.
Our video below explores how to tailor a warm-up to an individual and the session they’re doing. Plus we look at how to include balance, ROM work and plyometrics and research on whether a warming-up helps prevent running injury and how you might use it to improve running economy.
