I read a lot of research. Lots of it is very good, but there isn’t always a clear clinical use for the conclusions that are made. As a therapist who wants to be evidence-based, this can be hard.
Occasionally though we get a real gem, a paper packed with ideas that can directly help our patients. A new qualitative study from Green et al. (2022) *open access* is one such paper! They asked 20 expert sports clinicians how to assess, manage and prevent calf muscle strains and compiled their answers into an excellent review.
A great part of this overview was the 6 key phases of calf strain rehab they describe. We explore these phases as well as how to identify soleus versus gastroc injuries, important tests and prognostic indicators and how to reduce the likelihood of recurrence in our video below.
