Which muscles handle the biggest loads in endurance runners? You might think the quads do, or maybe the glutes? They do seem to get a lot of attention! But actually, it’s the calf muscles that seem to handle the highest peak loads.

So how can we train them to manage these loads? Should we work through range? Does turning the foot out or in matter? How heavy should we go?
