Right next to the achilles is this annoying little muscle called Plantaris. It extends from its origin on the femur where it has a small, thin muscle belly and its tendon continues along the medial aspect of the Achilles, which it accompanies to its insertion on the calcaneus.
I wouldn’t usually call a muscle ‘annoying’ but in this case, it might be fair! The tendon of the Plantaris muscle is thought to contribute to some cases of Achilles tendinopathy by compressing and irritating the Achilles.
This is easily overlooked and yet can lead to poor outcomes so our new video below will help you identify Plantaris involvement with 3 simple signs. We also discuss how to adapt rehab and options beyond conservative treatment.
