Our articles are not designed to replace medical advice. If you have an injury we recommend seeing a qualified health professional. To book an appointment with Tom Goom (AKA ‘The Running Physio’) visit our clinic page. We offer both in-person assessments and online consultations.

I was chatting to a runner the other day who was despondent and upset. She was worried her running days might be over. Running gives us so much and was clearly very important to her so I asked why she felt she had to stop. Her answer was one we encounter far to frequently… “My consultant said so.

He was concerned about arthritis in her Great Toe and his solution was to stop running.

Now, this isn’t a post to criticise consultants or any health professionals in particular – we can all be guilty of this. Instead, I want to highlight that there are often simple and effective solutions to problems like Great Toe pain that we should thoroughly explore before we prematurely end someone’s running career!

Our video below touches on this runner’s story and why there are symptoms. We then explore solutions for restoring range and strength, adapting loading, footwear selection and considering orthoses.
