Runners face a bewildering selection of options when it comes to picking running shoes. Do they go minimalist or brave barefoot? Should they opt for the opposite end of the spectrum and try a heavily cushioned maximalist style shoe? What about motion control v neutral and what about the latest fad?
It’s not easy.
It’s made harder when an athlete is injured and unsure whether the shoe is playing a role. One option suggested by the research is using the ‘comfort filter’ to select shoes based on how comfortable they feel for the runner to run in. Sounds simple but does it work?..
