Earlier this year a runner presented with persistent shin pain. They hadn’t been able to run consistently for 2 years and had already seen lots of people without success.

As we sat discussing their injury they brought out a neatly folded piece of paper with a handwritten list of questions for me…

What’s the diagnosis and what’s caused the shin pain?

Could my running gait or shoes be the issue?

What exercises can I do that might help?

Chatting to this runner it was clear that running means so much to them and they feel stuck and unable to find a path back to it. Sometimes we can feel stuck too. Shin pain can be tricky to treat and requires a different approach to other injuries. So with this case in mind I set to work creating a new video series for you, following his story and covering all key aspects of shin pain in runners.

Part 1 is available now, it explores assessment in detail to help you answer your patient’s questions and create a successful treatment plan.

What you’ll get from part 1:

  • Risk factors for shin pain to help you identify the cause
  • Key subjective questions to ask which are vital in diagnosis and treatment
  • How to palpate accurately (trigger warning, this does involve seeing my legs!)
  • What muscles to test and why
  • Impact testing and when it’s important
  • Gait analysis including 2 running assessment findings that can lead to shin pain

By the end of video 1, you’ll feel confident to assess runners with shin pain and ready for more in part 2!
