Our articles are not designed to replace medical advice. If you have an injury we recommend seeing a qualified health professional. To book an appointment with Tom Goom (AKA ‘The Running Physio’) visit our clinic page. We offer both in-person assessments and online consultations.

I must admit as I’ve got older I’ve become a bit cynical. In 20 years as a physio, I’ve seen all sorts of things come and go, with the next big thing soon being dismissed for something shiny and new. So when I was asked recently to discuss backwards running it’s fair to say I was a little sceptical!

When I started to explore the topic though I must admit I was surprised by what I found and it has some intriguing potential benefits. I discuss these and how we might utilise backwards running in a new podcast for Runner’s World UK. If like me, you like the research side of the story then I’d recommend reading Uthoff et al. (2018) for a great summary. I’ve captured the key findings in a graphic below that’s adapted from their paper.
